Introduction
Bonded labour is widely prevalent in many regions in India. The main feature of the system is that the debtor pledges his person or that of a member of his family for a loan and is released only on the repayment of the debt. The practice seems to be fairly old. Breman observed that it existed on a wide scale during the Moghul times.1
Bonded Labour is a peculiar form of labouring class always subject to exploitation by ruthless masters. It is a form of forced labour. Bonded Labour has been in the existence in several pockets of India analogous to ‘serfdom’2 in the medieval Europe. This system is prevalent in India society since time immemorial and it is one of the variegated forms of a abuse.
