The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 is one of the benevolent pieces of legislation intended to protect a large body of consumers from exploitation. The Act provides for an effective alternative system of consumer justice by a summary trial. Over the years, since the implementation of the Act, the Supreme Court of India has had numerous opportunity to interpret the provisions of the Act and clarify the scope and ambit of the Act and its benevolent provisions, powers of the Consumer Redressal Forums set up under the Act, how the complaints of the consumers are to be dealt with for expeditiously redressing the complaints and grievances of the consumers.
The law laid down by the Supreme Court being binding on all, its decisions assume greater significance and importance. Some of the more important decisions rendered by the apex Court in the last few years are presented here. The Second part of this Article will be carried in the next issue.
