DNA Testing : Mere Match is not Conclusive Proof Unless Statistics Corroborate

The use of DNA testing reports in Indian Courts has grown over the years and being admitted as evidence. While a few details are necessarily being tested before admissibility in all cases, the moot point that each DNA case stands on its own and results depends upon its respective situation and circumstances is not being given due significance. This article is based upon the author’s experience of almost 1000 cases to his credit as a DNA Expert from the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad. As of now, the DNA Labs issuing reports to aid the Criminal Justice System, conveniently show a DNA profile in a case as unique and unless it is proved during cross-examination that there was a laboratory or handling error the accused is bound to be punished.
