Abstract This research study deals with legality of string operations in the context of freedom of the media which includes electronic and audio visual.  The various instances of violation of media freedom have been studied in the light of judicial decisions.  The right of the media in relation to criminal trials has been discussed.  Guidelines relating to interviewing of under trials have been discussed in the light of existing jail manual.  The concept of criminal contempt vis-à-vis court proceedings has been studied in detail including allegations made against Judges.  Various suggestions have been made for the media to avoid legal actions by string operations which are ex-facie illegal.
