Once a Judge, Always a Judge

Article 124(7) of the Constitution of India says that no person who has held office as a Judge of the Supreme Court shall plead or act in any Court or before any authority within the territory of India. Thus Art. 124(7) provides an absolute embargo on practice by perosns who had held the office as a Judge of the Apex Court. The corresponding prohibition qua the Judges of High Courts is contained in Art. 220 of the Constitution of India. But the restriction contained in Art. 220 is qualified and not absolute like Art. 124(7). When the Constitution came into force in 1950, Article 220 also contained total ban on practice by persons who held the office of Judges of High Courts.
But by Section 13 of the Constitution (Seventh Amendment) Act, 1956, Art. 220 was amended . Article 220, before and after the Constitution (Seventh Amendment) Act, 1956 are as follows :
