Salient Features of Child Labour Act, 1986

With a firm object to prohibit the engagement of children in certain employments and to regulate the conditions of work of children in certain other employments [See the Preamble of the Act] the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 is passed. To achieve the objectives a good number of suitable provisions are also provided in the Act. The Act is also made for obtaining uniformity in the definition of ‘Child in various laws relating to child labour because the term "Child" is defined in different Acts in different ways1. The new Act defines the term "Child" as a person who has not completed his 14 years of age (S. 2(ii)].The Act repeals the Employment of Children Act, 1938, but reproduces in Schedule Parts "A" and "B" the same as prohibited occupations, and processes as in the employment of Children Act except construction industry [Schedule Part B, Item 1] wh ....
