The Mimansa Principles of Interpretation-II

This article is a sequel to the earlier article on the same subject published in the November 1992 issue of A.I.R. The writer has received several queries on the subject from various quarters, and hence it has become necessary to write this article to further elucidate the topic.
As already mentioned in the earlier article; there are six systems in classical Indian philosophy, and Purva Mimansa is one of them.* In Western jurisprudence the principles of interpretation are contained in Maxwell's 'Interpretation of Statutes' and few other books (Craies, Sutherland, etc.). In India, on the other hand, a whole system of philosophy was devoted to the principles of interpretation, , and we have gone much deeper into the subject than Westerners. Scores (if not hundreds) of books were written on the subject by a host of authors, and many of them are outstanding works of scholarship.
